diving baliBALI DIVING

Tulamben has become Bali's most famous diving area and therefore where you are most likely to meet internationally recognised underwater photographers and writers. Tulamben Bay, like the rest of Bali, is situated in the richest marine biogeographic zone in the world. Being on the north-east coast, the bay receives very plankton-rich waters from the major ocean current that moves from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. This, coupled with the fact that the three main dive sites provide totally different physical environments, mean that Tulamben contains a stunningly diverse underwater ecosystem.

The beach is fist-sized black volcanic rocks that become sand in the shallows. This black sand does not provide the reflective properties of white limestone sand and, combined with the amount of plankton in the water, accounts for the relatively low visibility (12-25M). It does however provide a dramatic contrast, which brings out the colours of the corals, gorgonians, fish and other marinelife. The 100s of macro-species that live here both blend and contrast beautifully with the sand.

Tulamben is a wonderful place to learn to dive and to learn about underwater life. There are occasional sightings of Mola-Mola (Sunfish), Manta Rays, Whale Shark, tuna and other pelagics but it is the permanent population of Tulamben that brings people here for the 1st and 100th time. There is also the wreck of the US liberty ship from the 2nd world war.

Nusa Lembongan
Nusa Lembongan Island is situated 12 miles southeast of Bali. It is one hour travelling time by boat from Benoa Harbour. This pear shaped island is around 4km long and 2km wide. It is surrounded by a beautiful fringing reef, which hosts a myriad of marine life. The waters are renowned for their abundance of life and great surf breaks. The reef has been declared a marine park by Indonesian authorities. Not only does the reef support its own eco-system, but it supports most of the villagers on the island as well.

The local people farm seaweed.Village life is very slow and enchanting. Very few cars and motorbikes are seen on the roads. The people are steeped in tradition, and one could imagine Bali being like this island, thirty years ago.

Although the island is small, there are many things to do. Fishing, diving, surfing, ,mangrove exploring, discovering natural fresh water springs, underground cave house exploring, cycling around the island. A visit to the bat caves on a nearby island, or a picnic at dream beach.Try catching mud cabs in the mangrove area at the back of the island. There is something for everyone at Nusa Lembongan.

Menjangan Island
Menjangan means 'deer' hangs just off shore of the mountainous point in far northwestern Bali. Because the island is in protected position currents and wind-generate waves are rarely a bother, and the reef here offer fine diving. Occasionally the water can be crystal clear snorkeler, distinct, 50 meters above you.

The island is part of Bali Barat National Park, a protected Reserve area that encompasses much of Bali little-populated western end.The coral around Menjangan are vertical down to 30-60 meters, and then slope outward. The reef surface is particularly rugged. Gorgonians of many kinds reach large size here, and huge barrel sponges are abundant.Soft corals blanket the colorful walls all the way down.

Explore the unique underwater contours of the bay of Bajul, the silky crystal clear sea in the area is incredibly calm, and the reef around Menjangan island offer drop offs ranging from 60-80 meters, providing some memorable diving.

Spectacular 60 m walls provide the backdrop for an outstanding dive experience. For most divers and snorkellers alike this is truly paradise. Mainly deer inhabits the island itself and the fish have no fear of divers ! A cooper clad Dutch trading vessel lies in 40 m on the north side of the island. Its Admiralty Pattern anchor remains where it was dropped on the reef in 6 m, now considered by the local invertebrates as "Prime Real Estate". Fantastic limestone formations covered with a hugely diverse selection of corals. Sponges and soft corals are able to flourish on the protected south side of the island.
