Diving in Maumere, Flores

Diving in the Bay of Maumere can be as good as anywhere in Indonesia. In some areas, under the right circumstances, the numbers and varieties of  fish are just short incredible. The reefs range from steep walls, sometimes with strong currents, to offshore detached reefs and broad, shallow reefs for snorkelers and beginning scuba divers. Visibility at the best sites in 50 meters, as good as can be found anywhere in Indonesia.

Large species commonly seen here include stingrays, eagle rays and manta rays, reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, turtles and, towards the end of the year, whale sharks. The number of medium and smaller reef animals here is staggering - in fact, it is one of the most species rich pieces of coral reef in the world. You will see unicornfish, barracuda, groupers, sweetlips, parrotfish, snappers, tuna, bluefinned jacks, anglefish, Moorish idols, bannerfish, fusiliers, triggerfish, butterflyfish, scorpionfish, puffers, boxfish, trumpetfish, anemonefish and more. Squid, cuttlefish, lobster, shrimp, crabs and nudibranchs can also always be found. The  variety of hard and soft corals and other animals is just about as great, including anemons, soft corals, gorgonians, huge sponges and sea fans, and black coral.
